Automatic Fire Detection
Fire detection and alarm systems (FD&A) are intricate and vital systems that consist of multiple serviceable components, all of which must be regularly maintained to ensure optimal performance and compliance. At Photuris, we take a thorough approach during every service visit to ensure your fire alarm system is functioning at its best and fully compliant with the necessary regulations.
During a typical service visit, we carry out a comprehensive range of checks, including:
- Operation of Automatic Fire Detectors, Manual Call Points, and Sounders: We test a certain percentage of fire detection devices (dependant on your service schedule) to ensure they respond properly to simulated fire conditions, and that manual call points and sounders are functioning correctly to alert everyone on-site.
- Capacity Tests on Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Batteries: We conduct tests on the batteries within fire alarm panels, power supplies, sounder controllers, and other components, ensuring that they are able to supply the necessary power in the event of a mains failure.
- Wireless Device Battery Checks (where applicable): If your system includes wireless devices, we will check their batteries via the relevant panel or translator to ensure they are at full charge and will function correctly when needed.
- Operation of All Panel Functions: We check all the functions of the fire alarm panel, including indicators, buttons, isolation switches, and any other controls, to ensure they are working as intended. Any faults with the panel’s operation are identified and addressed.
- Compliance with BS 5839: We will ensure that your system is fully compliant with the relevant version of BS 5839, the British Standard for fire detection and alarm systems. Any areas of non-compliance will be noted, and we will provide recommendations for remedial action to bring your system into full compliance.
- Device Lifecycles: We assess the age of all devices in your system, taking into account the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan. If any devices are nearing or have surpassed their recommended lifecycle, we will inform you of the need for replacement or upgrade.
Once our engineers have completed the checks, you will receive a detailed service document outlining the findings, including whether any issues were identified. If we find any areas requiring attention, your dedicated account manager or one of our estimators will contact you with a remedial quote, outlining the necessary steps and costs to resolve any issues and bring your system back to full functionality.
Emergency Lighting
Emergency lighting systems are a critical component in ensuring the safety of building occupants in the event of power loss or any other emergency. These systems provide essential illumination for escape routes, enabling people to navigate safely even in total darkness. Today, most emergency lighting systems utilise self-contained lighting units, where each light features its own battery. These batteries are kept fully charged 24/7, so they are always ready to operate in the event of an emergency. However, because these batteries maintain a high level of charge continually, regular testing is crucial to ensure they can provide the required backup power for the specified time – typically 3 hours.
During an emergency lighting service, one of our skilled engineers will carry out a thorough inspection of your system. This includes a visual walk-round of your site, where they will ensure that all emergency lights are free from damage, are clean, and display a functioning charging indicator. Our engineers will then simulate a power failure by switching off the power to the emergency lighting system for a predetermined period. During this time, the engineer will leave the lights to drain their batteries and will conduct another walk-round to check that no lights have failed.
Once the test is complete, the engineer will reconnect the power to the system, bringing all lights back on. They will then prepare or update (depending on if we’ve been to your site before) a detailed asset list and a comprehensive service report, which will include any issues identified and recommendations for remedial actions if necessary. This thorough approach ensures that your emergency lighting system is fully operational and compliant with the relevant regulations, giving you peace of mind that your building is prepared for any emergency situation.
Fire Extinguishers
