Watermist fire suppression engineered for trains, trams and rolling stock, delivered in the UK by Photuris with the world leader in rail watermist.

Onboard Specialists

Watermist. The right suppression for rolling stock.

Passenger vehicles demand a fire suppression technology that controls fire fast, uses a fraction of the water of conventional sprinklers, and works safely around people and electronics. That's why the world's leading rolling stock operators rely on Fogtec watermist, and why Photuris delivers it across the UK fleet.

Rolling Stock Watermist

The global standard for onboard fire protection.

Fogtec watermist systems are installed on tens of thousands of vehicles worldwide, from metro trains to intercity fleets. Photuris is Fogtec's UK rolling stock partner, bringing that technology to British trains, trams and light rail.

10×

Less water. More effect.

Watermist uses a fraction of the water of conventional sprinklers, reducing weight, damage and downtime after any activation.

3D

Cools & suffocates.

Ultra-fine microdroplets absorb heat and displace oxygen in three dimensions, suppressing fires that conventional systems struggle to reach.

50–200
bar

Optimum droplet spectrum.

High-pressure operation between 50 and 200 bar delivers the optimum droplet spectrum for onboard suppression—Class I water mist per NFPA 750.

EN

Designed for rail.

Fogtec water mist systems are designed for rail applications and support compliance with EN 45545 fire safety requirements when integrated into rolling stock systems.

Where It Goes

Engine compartments, HVAC, interiors & technical cabinets.

Fogtec delivers a complete onboard fire suppression capability, protecting every high-risk area of a modern passenger vehicle: traction packs, HVAC, driver cabs and passenger saloons. High-pressure operation above 60 bar atomises water into microdroplets that cool, smother and scrub smoke at a fraction of the water damage of any conventional system.

  • HVAC plant & roof-mounted equipment
  • Driver cabs & passenger saloons
  • Battery compartments & electrical cabinets
  • Depot & workshop protection: FOGGUN manual wall hydrants with hose runs up to 60 m

Compliance

BS EN 45545. Every detail matters.

BS EN 45545 sets the bar for fire safety on UK rolling stock, from material classification through detection to suppression. It's not a tick-box, it's a design philosophy, and it shapes every decision on a modern vehicle.

Our engineers work to the relevant hazard levels and operation categories from the start, whether we're fitting out new-builds, delivering mid-life refurbishment or retrofitting Fogtec to legacy fleets.

We hold the accreditations to deliver: RISQS-verified, CIRAS members, and Sentinel-sponsored engineers for trackside and depot work.

Our Approach

From fit-out to lifetime.
Three stages. One partner.

We work with rolling stock operators, lessors and refurbishment contractors at every stage, from vehicle specification to final withdrawal.

01    Inception

Early engagement. Better outcomes.

We engage at the earliest stage to de-risk projects, influence design decisions and embed fire and security requirements from the ground up.

Frequently asked questions

What's BS EN 45545 and how does it shape an onboard fire system?
BS EN 45545 is the European standard adopted in the UK that sets the bar for fire safety on rolling stock — covering material classification, fire detection, suppression and evacuation across hazard categories. It's a design philosophy, not a tick-box: every cable, panel and seat fabric is selected against it, and our installations are documented end-to-end to support type approval.
Why watermist on a passenger vehicle?
Onboard fire suppression has to extinguish quickly, use minimal water (vehicles can't carry sprinkler-scale tanks), survive vibration and temperature extremes, and stay safe around passengers and electronics. Fogtec watermist meets all of those: 60+ bar atomisation into 50–100 µm droplets cools and smothers using roughly 10% of the water of a sprinkler. Certified to BS EN 14972.
Where on a vehicle does it go?
Engine and diesel-traction compartments, HVAC plant, roof-mounted equipment, driver cabs, passenger saloons, battery compartments and electrical cabinets. Photuris also installs depot and workshop protection — FOGGUN manual wall hydrants with hose runs up to 60 m for vehicle-on-vehicle scenarios.
Can you fit Fogtec to existing fleets, or only new-builds?
Both. Mid-life refurbishment is one of our most common engagements — retrofitting onboard fire suppression on existing rolling stock during scheduled overhauls. The system fits within existing electrical and HVAC envelopes; we coordinate the integration with the lessor, operator and refurbishment principal.
How does this differ from your rail station / depot work?
Rail & Transport (stations, depots, trackside infrastructure) is fixed-asset fire and security on Network Rail / station-side estates. Rolling Stock is onboard — the systems travelling with the train. Different standards, different test regimes, different certification path. We deliver both, but the design teams treat them as separate disciplines.
